Between the Steel and Glass

Street scene. Elgin Street, Hong Kong

The movies have taught us that Hong Kong is a soaring city of gleaming steel and glass, filled with super heroes, secret agents and “bullet time” action heroes.

But in between the skyscrapers is a real life that’s far more interesting than the Hollywood make-believe. People talking, people doing, people speaking, people being. Pause for a moment and glance down an alleyway and you will see the stalls and stands where people shop and talk and eat and meet. Where shoes are heeled and flowers sold, watches repaired and chops carved. Life, like iron rich blood, flows through the arteries and capillaries between the towers of steel and glass.

Art of Architecture

New York Skyscraper

Buildings are 3 dimensional structures, the physical embodiment of an architect’s design. Photographs are a 2 dimensional representation that can seldom capture more than a small part of the whole. Yet somehow, if well captured, a photograph can show an extra dimension to the building you may not previously have been aware of.

8th Day

Nature created the universe in 6 days. She toiled to bring forth the stars and the worlds, the moon and the rocks, the dust and the dark matter that fills the void. Then, on the 8th Day….

Modern Life

What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.” (from “Leisure” by W. H. Davies).

Everyone’s a stranger, passing in the streets but never pausing long enough to meet. Urbanisation and technology have increased the pressures and pace of modern life and this project attempts to capture the resulting feeling of loneliness and separation that can occur in the middle of a crowded city.

People rush past each other without ever pausing to connect. Shift working neighbours living within feet of each other hardly meet, while technology that could connect us, just as often separates us. What little free time we have together that could be spent connecting, is instead spent staring at the bright screens of our digital devices that hold our attention like moths fluttering around a street light.
